HCASB 2013- Goldendale, WA
PARTICIPANT
WHAT IS HCASB?
Healthcare Alternative Spring Break (HCASB) aims to help pre-health undergraduates learn about the unique challenges and characteristics of rural health care through first-hand, immersive experiences. During the University of Washington’s Spring Break, undergraduates travel to a community in Washington state, and shadow healthcare professionals for four days to learn about their clinical practice. On the fifth day of the experience, participants give back to their host community, typically through school visits to promote the pursuit of higher education. |
This was my first experience with HCASB and it was amazing! Goldendale is a small town of about 2,000 people near the Washington-Oregon border. During spring break, I learned about the limits of practicing rural health care and how providers must be creative when treating their patients. I also learned about the distinct culture of rural communities and discovered my love for dentistry!
MY DENTAL NIGHTMARE:
As a child, I had a horrific dental experience, one which left me in fear of visiting the dentist. Since then I have struggled to overcome my anxieties. Learn why I vowed never to become a dentist and how my time in Goldendale completely changed my mind!
