Child Oral Health Relief Education (C.O.R.E.)
ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR
I joined C.O.R.E. because I grew up in an extremely diverse neighborhood. Early on I became aware of the inequalities that existed within my community and the effects of poverty on the underprivileged. I wanted to join an organization that advocated for and served these populations. I wanted to be part of a movement that promoted health education so that people, regardless of their economic status, could be given the tools to take charge of their own health. This is exactly what C.O.R.E. is all about!

TEAM LEADER
Returning to HCASB for my third year as a Team Leader was an extremely rewarding experience. This year I established a new site in Coupeville and Oak Harbor. I secured shadowing opportunities with Dr. Julie Grove at the Coupeville Dental Clinic, Dr. Gary Berner, and Dr. Sarah Hill and Dr. Joseph Stout at the Playhouse Dental Clinic. Our last day of the program was dedicated to educating youth at the Coupeville Boys & Girls Club about the importance of oral health and maintaining good hygiene. Dental kits consisting of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toys were donated by Dr. Julie Grove.

A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE
Jane had an amazing story, but she didn't realize it at first. She came to me with very little to say about herself and she didn't know where to begin with her personal statement. So, for the next 10 minutes we had a casual conversation about her friends and family. Our 10 minute chat turned into 40 minutes of laughter and storytelling.
It turns out Jane was more interesting than she had anticipated. She immigrated from the Philippines when she was just nine, she left behind her close relatives, and battled neglect and depression in her new home. However, she found support through her classmates and inspiration from her AVID teacher, who encouraged her to apply for college. In the next 20 minutes I helped her shape her story, pulling out her obstacles and helping her reflect on what she had learned, how she had grown, and what her future goals were.
When we finished writing her outline, Jane was ecstatic. She thanked me for helping her and as she gave me a hug and said, "You're a magician!"
Jane completely made my day. Actually, she made my entire week! I had an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. I was happy I could help her find her voice as well as give her confidence. I became a Dream Project Mentor for moments like these. It's great to know that you have the ability to make in impact on someone else's life, with just a pen and a piece of paper.
