welcome to lisa ngo's honors portfolio!
My name is Lisa Ngo and I'm a senior at the University of Washington. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and have spent most of my childhood in Tacoma's Lincoln International District, where my parents own a small gift shop. I grew up hearing stories about people from around the world and this fueled my love for learning about culture.
I also lived in an extremely diverse neighborhood. As a second generation Asian American I became aware of the cultural differences that existed within my community at a very young age. I later came to better understand the countless obstacles minorities face and how this greatly impacts their lives in America. At the University of Washington I pursued my interest in learning about social inequalities and examined how culture plays a role in society. More specifically, I became interested in the way culture impacts health care on a global and local scale. That is why I chose to major in Medical Anthropology & Global Health. I plan to use this knowledge to improve health outcomes for disadvantaged or underrepresented minority groups in the field of dentistry. |
FUN FACTS:
- I once fell off the lift at Crystal Mountain and was retrieved by the Ski Patrol with no cuts or bruises.
- My gymnastics buddy headbutted me in the mouth during a game of red-light-green-light and I lost my two front teeth.
- An ear infection caused serious damage to a facial nerve and I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. The muscles on the right side of my face were paralyzed for three weeks and I spent most of that time making faces at myself in the mirror.
